Motivado por una antigua historia familiar, Pablo busca la ayuda de un profesor de la Universidad de los Ratones para inventar un aparato capaz de sumergirse hasta las profundidades del océano Atlántico. Juntos iniciarán un laborioso proceso de estudio que les llevará a encontrar un arca perdida en el mar con una sorpresa en su interior: el diario de un antepasado de Pablo, que lo relacionará con uno de los inventores más importantes de la historia. Así nos presenta la editorial Juventud el álbum ilustrado ‘Edison. Dos ratones en busca de un tesoro‘. Como en las dos anteriores obras de la serie Ratones Aventureros, Torben Kuhlmann consigue sumergir al lector en un apasionante viaje entre la historia y la fantasía. Al final del libro encontramos una breve biografía de Thomas Edison con otras referencias de inventores que contribuyeron a la aparición de la primera bombilla. Con su autor hemos charlado un poco más sobre este proyecto.
¿Cómo nació este proyecto? Torben Kuhlmann: “La idea del libro ‘Edison’ nació durante mi trabajo en la anterior aventura del ratón ‘Armstrong’. En ese libro, un ratón llegaba a la luna, entonces, ¿qué podría ser lo próximo? Hice de esta pregunta el dilema central de mi protagonista. El ratón en “Edison” es el mismo famoso ratón que colocó comida en la superficie de la luna y tampoco podía responder la pregunta. ¿Cómo puedo superar ese logro? De la nada, apareció un ratón más joven con un mapa del tesoro y, aunque la búsqueda del tesoro es considerada una fantasía por el mayor, surge un nuevo objetivo: llevar dos ratones al fondo del océano”.
¿Qué nos encontraremos en este libro? “En ‘Edison’ encontrarás una historia de aventuras sobre una búsqueda del tesoro. Verás muchos experimentos interesantes con diferentes equipos de buceo en el camino y, con suerte, una resolución sorprendente del misterio: ¿qué es el tesoro de un ratón y cómo se relaciona con el inventor Thomas Edison? ¿Qué quisiste contar con esta historia? “Es una historia de perseverancia e ingenio -asegura Torben Kuhlmann-. Y quiero mostrar que hay otros tipos de tesoros, distintos de los que normalmente esperarías, especialmente en el fondo del mar”.
¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre las ilustraciones? ¿Con qué técnicas están hechas? “Las ilustraciones se realizan a la antigua usanza con lápiz, tinta y principalmente acuarelas. Y cada obra de arte juega un papel necesario en la narración general. No todo se cuenta en el texto, por lo que el lector está invitado a “leer” las ilustraciones también”. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de elaboración de este libro? “Fue una experiencia estresante pero, al final, satisfactoria -confiesa Torben Kuhlmann-. Siempre es un desafío equilibrar las diferentes partes de la narración, saber cuándo usar palabras y cuándo permitir que las ilustraciones hablen por sí mismas. Primero comencé con un resumen de la historia, seguido de un guión gráfico aproximado pero completo. Luego, comenzó mi trabajo en la obra de arte final y el texto final, que tardó varios meses en concluir”.
¿Qué dirías que has aprendido trabajando en este libro? “Espero perfeccionar mis habilidades como narrador de cuentos con cada nuevo libro. ‘Edison’ fue el mayor desafío hasta ahora, porque era la narrativa más compleja en comparación con mis libros anteriores”. ¿Estás trabajando en algún nuevo proyecto ahora? ¿Qué nos puedes contar? “Oh, realmente no puedo decir nada al respecto en este momento, pero habrá una nueva aventura con el ratón con un tema sorprendente en un futuro cercano”.

How this project was born? The idea for the book „Edison“ was born during my work on the previous mouse adventure „Armstrong“. In that book a mouse made its way to the moon, so what could possibly be next? I made this question the central dilemma of my protagonist. The mouse in “Edison” is the same one who so famously set food on the surface of the moon and is also unable to answer the question. How can I top that achievement? Out of nowhere, a younger mouse appears with a treasure map and although such a treasure hunt is regarded as fantasy by the older one, a new goal emerges: Bringing two mice to the bottom of the ocean. What are we find inside this book? In “Edison” you will find an adventurous story about a treasure hunt. You will see many interesting experiments with different diving equipments along the way and hopefully a surprising resolution of the mystery: What is a mouse’s treasure and how is it related to the inventor Thomas Edison? What did you want to tell with this story? It is a story of perseverance and ingenuity. And I want to show that there are other types of treasures than you would normally expect, especially on the bottom of the sea. What can you tell us about the illustrations? /With what technique are made? The illustrations are done the old fashioned way with pencil, ink and mainly water colors. And each artwork plays a necessary part in the overall storytelling. Not everything is told in the text, so you are invited to “read” the illustrations also. How was the process of making this book? It was a stressful but in the end fulfilling experience. It is always a challenge to balance the different parts of storytelling, to know when to use words and when to allow the illustrations to speak for themselves. I first started with an outline of the story, followed by a rough but complete storyboard. Then, my work on the final artwork and the final text began, which took several month to conclude. What would you say you have learned working on this book? I hope that I refine my skills as a storyteller with each new book. “Edison” was the biggest challenge so far because it was the most complex narrative compared to my previous books. Are you working in a new project now? What can you tell us about? Oh, I can’t really tell anything about it right now, but there will be a new mouse adventure with a surprising theme in the near future
